Logistics in Italy increases (+5.5%) but there is a shortage of workers

There's a hunt for talent across different logistics fields in this important industry. It offers lucrative career paths, yet it's often underappreciated and not fully acknowledged in our country.

In recent years, Italy's logistics market has seen consistent growth. Despite sector challenges, data from the “Gino Marchet” Contract Logistics Observatory at Milan Technical University indicates a pattern: from hitting around 100 billion euro in 2021 (a 16.8% increase) to 106 billion in 2022 (a 6.4% rise). Forecasts for 2023 suggest a continued ascent, projecting a turnover of 112 billion euro (a 5.5% increase).

Workers wanted

The industry, which is crucial to the country's economy, grapples with a shortage of skilled professionals - a potential threat to Italian companies' global competitiveness. This lacking hampers their ability to deliver top-notch services and innovate. With over 60,000 vacancies, the demand spans beyond drivers, encompassing IT experts, quality control assessors, procurement assistants, warehouse managers, and others, which are all roles that offer lucrative prospects for growth and continuous learning. Adding to the challenge is the low representation of women, accounting for merely 20.4% of the sector's workforce.

An opportunity for young people

How can we narrow this divide and enhance the allure of logistics careers? Companies within the sector need to amplify their efforts in highlighting the value of logistics work and offering enticing career pathways to draw in fresh talent. Simultaneously, a collaborative strategy involving companies, workers, and institutions is crucial. This approach should focus on crafting tailored training initiatives for the younger generation, equipping them for the complexities of modern logistics, and emphasising the significance of working within this sector.

Education stands as a cornerstone within the Transpotec Logitec initiative. In the upcoming edition, collaborations with media and sector associations will continue to present endeavours directed at engaging and professionally updating young individuals. These efforts will include a blend of institutional sessions and specialised training sessions tailored to their needs.
