The evolution of urban deliveries: microvans and cargo bikes serving the last mile
image
The discussion on the sustainability of freight transport is shifting its focus to urban logistics. At Transpotec Logitec a dedicated area will illustrate potential opportunities and explore new approaches that are making last-mile deliveries even greener.

As e-commerce grows in parallel to the need to reduce environmental impact, urban delivery logistics is seeking alternatives. A key aspect of this evolution is the increasing adoption of sustainable solutions, such as cargo bikes and microvans, to handle the so-called “last mile” of deliveries – the final leg of the service from collection point to destination.

Alessandro Ledda of BIGA Cargo Bike Specialised explains: “Cargo bikes are already revolutionising urban deliveries in many European cities, transforming the way goods reach recipients and with a clear positive impact: they reduce air and noise pollution, ease traffic congestion and grant access to pedestrian and restricted traffic areas. These vehicles are highly versatile and can be adapted to a wide range of delivery needs. Thanks to their reinforced frames, cargo bikes can withstand weights of over 200 kg (compared to 100 kg for conventional bicycles), and, with the aid of an electric motor, can comfortably handle the heaviest loads with little effort. Furthermore, their agility allows them to avoid traffic jams and reach destinations faster than traditional vehicles.”

At the same time, microvans are gaining ground as a versatile alternative to larger vehicles for urban deliveries. With their compact size, which allows them to easily navigate narrow city streets, microvans offer a practical solution for delivery companies that need to handle larger volumes of goods than cargo bikes can manage. In addition, many of these vehicles are now available in electric or hybrid versions, further reducing the environmental impact of urban deliveries.

When it comes to the challenges posed by logistics, Transpotec Logitec is the ideal place to find answers and food for thought. Among the upcoming edition’s new features is the obligatory special focus on new approaches to managing city deliveries. This will take place in the Last Mile – Microvan & Cargo Bike Area in Hall 10, which will play host not only to suppliers’ offerings but also to a test drive area where visitors can experience innovative solutions and proposals first-hand.
