New engines. The view from companies: Volvo Trucks

Efficiency and sustainability are the new watchwords for engines. Manufacturers are already prepared and have made significant investments in research and development of new environmentally friendly engines. Volvo Trucks' viewpoint.

While road freight transport continues to increase, heavy goods vehicles already account for 30% of CO2 emissions in Italy alone (data from Politecnico di Milano). Identifying alternative engines that can reduce emissions is therefore an urgent requirement – and not only to comply with decarbonisation guidelines from central government. Manufacturers have been shifting in this direction for some time and making a range of investments in sustainable industrial vehicles. We discussed this with Volvo Trucks, which will be exhibiting at Transpotec Logitec with some significant new products only recently presented to the market.

Volvo Trucks has set out a clear sustainability roadmap which includes several technologies to achieve zero emissions by 2050. Francesco Sonzogni, Marketing Manager Volvo Trucks, explains: "For Volvo, our zero-emissions target is only achievable through a mix of solutions whose selection depends on the type of activity and work to be carried out. We continue to develop and increase the efficiency of our endothermic engine vehicle; by using biofuels, such as HVO, this engine will enable us to significantly reduce CO2 emissions by up to 100%. We are also working on vehicles fuelled by gas – i.e. liquefied natural gas – and biogas. And naturally we also have electric vehicles, which are performing very well and are perfect for urban or regional logistics. It’s true to say that we were pioneers in this field by offering a complete range of heavy electric vehicles.”

Transpotec Logitec will therefore be an interesting showcase for all these innovations, offering an opportunity to see them up close and even test them out. Volvo's stand will feature models from the newly launched Aero line. Sonzogni continues: “Aero is the result of more than ten years of research and development and is an important step forwards in reducing our carbon footprint. The new FH Aero and FH16 Aero trucks represent the perfect combination between design, comfort, aerodynamics and technological innovation, resulting in a range that is our most efficient ever.
