Truck driver, what a passion!

Italy faces a shortage of 20,000 drivers, posing a potential threat to the thriving sector. Prioritising investment in specialised personnel training and fostering a work-centric culture is paramount to draw in new talent. Andrea Gottardi from Gottardi Autotrasporti discussed this critical issue with us.

“Being a truck driver today requires genuine dedication. It demands a passion for the job, a strong belief in your work, and, naturally, a willingness to make sacrifices, much like any other profession”, shares Andrea Gottardi, representing the third generation leading Gottardi Autotrasporti—a company with a legacy of over seventy years and sixty employees.

The role of a driver is rigorous, involving extensive hours on the road and the inherent risks of driving. Additionally, as highlighted by Gottardi, dealing with often challenging customers adds to the complexities—a combination of factors that may not necessarily attract young individuals to pursue this profession.

“Employers need to adopt beneficial strategies to alleviate work strain. We treat our employees as partners, recognising their crucial role in our company's operations. Safety is a priority, alongside ensuring driver comfort. This commitment reflects in our practice of renewing our vehicles every five years, equipped to provide a comfortable journey. We firmly believe that contented drivers perform better, and this approach has proven to be advantageous. Currently, we stand out as one of the few companies not facing driver recruitment challenges”.

Hence, prioritizing innovation remains central for transportation firms aiming to thrive in the market, encompassing both personnel administration and vehicle choices. Gottardi Autotrasporti stands as an early adopter, having acquired one of Italy's first electric vehicles and recently obtaining the TCR (Transport Compliance Rating) certification, which certifies the company's practices and sustainability measures. “Italy, unfortunately, doesn't sufficiently endorse individual company initiatives”, stresses Gottardi. “Unlike Germany or France, where the government has provided significant support to facilitate fleet replacements and encourage energy transition”.

Once again this year, Gottardi Autotrasporti will join Fiap at Transpotec Logitec, aiming to share their expertise and engage with both familiar faces and new clientèle. “This event is truly exceptional and valuable. Following the success of the previous edition, we're eager to participate once more. It offered us a platform to establish numerous connections, foster relationships with new customers, and connect with industry peers. More than just a commercial opportunity, it allowed us to strengthen enduring relationships with our existing clientèle. Seeing my customers visit our booth and sharing our trade fair experience with my colleagues who visited us on Saturday was incredibly rewarding. I'm confident that the upcoming edition will be just as fulfilling”.
